Edward Sutcliffe
Process

After years of working from photographs, beholden to an image to make my art; I wanted to create simpler work based on me looking at things and trying to paint them.

To me this feels the most the most natural way of creating art. I really didn't want to get caught up too much with technique or style. I simply had to try to paint what I would see with the few colours that I had on my palette.

To look and paint is a magical process but I want my work to be fresh, relevant and ambitious.

I wanted a sense of grandeur and scale to these paintings. I wanted to make them large. These paintings are 230 x 150cm. I'd paint smaller sections and then glue them to the to the larger canvas.

From this a landscape emerges.

This is an image of my latest painting whilst in progress.
